Thank you for stopping by! My name is Kirsten Kolea Laurel and I am the instructor at Kolea Art Studio. My experience in teaching art has ranged from a fine arts program where I have taught for eight years, to a primary school in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and assistant positions at a local preschool and third grade classroom. I have worked with ages three through adult, although I have most frequently have worked with kids. I am based in Woodinville, Washington.
I am a second-year graduate student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Art Therapy program at Antioch University Seattle. I am working towards my licensures as both a Washington State Registered Art Therapist and a Clinical Mental Health Counselor. Note: This is NOT art therapy because I am not yet licensed as an art therapist, although I do believe that art has tremendous healing capacity and I do try to incorporate elements into my classes that help build resilience in kids.
I love to think about how art can be used to help my students find their voices, express themselves, and provide joy and contentment. My favorite moments with my students are when I can see their excitement and pride when they learn something new that they are capable of. Something that I find very wonderful is that this sense of wonder and accomplishment in these moments can translate to believing in themselves when it comes to other parts of their lives, too! I treasure the opportunity to bring art into the lives of my students. I look forward to meeting you and working with you!
In my personal art, I especially enjoy working with clay, watercolor, micron pen, charcoal, and oil paint. Usually I find myself drawn to images of animals and nature of any sort, and I adore foggy scenes that I can paint with watercolor! In my free time I love to hike, make ceramics, garden, collect rocks and other nature treasures, camp, read, loom-knit, and of course spend time with my loved ones and cat!
Welcome to Kolea Art Studio!
